CES 3rd Grade Teachers

Beth Payne

My name is Beth Payne. I graduated from Tennessee Technological University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education in 2008. I have lived in Smith County my whole life. I graduated from Smith County High School in 2004. I have been married since 2005. My husband is a police officer in Lebanon. I have wanted to be a teacher since I was little, and I love everyday at school.

Janet Wiggins

I am originally from New Jersey, but did not begin my teaching career until I moved to Tennessee in 1987.  I taught at Pleasant Shade from 1988 until it closed in 2006.   I was then transferred to CES where I continue to enjoy my tenure as a classroom teacher.

My husband, Gary, also works at CES, and we live on a farm in Jackson County.

My greatest joy is to help a child succeed in school.  I am passionate about reading and attempt to instill that in my children. I believe reading opens doors and windows to the world.  I want my children to experience that adventure.

Rachel Wheeley

I live in Carthage with my husband, Jason, and our three children.  In 1993, I graduated from Smith County High School and attended Tennessee Tech.  After graduating college, I taught in Macon county until I had twin boys in 2003. I stayed home for 4 years and returned to work in 2007.  We were also blessed with the birth of our little girl in 2007.  I love to read, decorate, and do crafts.

Ms. Jyl Shanks-Smith

I welcome your child to second grade.  I am a 1990 graduate of Smith County High School.  In 1995, I graduated with a degree in secondary education specializing in History/Geography.  I taught 7th, 9th, and 11th grade History/Geography at Smith County High School from 1995-1999.  I was a stay at home mom from 1999-2005.  During my time at home I worked in a Mother's Day out program, and I also received my certification in elementary education.

I enjoy spending time with my son, Jason Robert Smith, my family, and friends.  I still live on the farm where I grew up.  I also enjoy working in my flower garden, going swimming in the summer, and reading.  I also enjoy watching basketball games.

At school, you may see my mother who occasionally comes with me to help.  She was a school teacher for 42 years in Putnam County.  Her name is Doris Shanks.  She still enjoys going to school and helping the children.

Teaching second grade at Carthage Elementary has been a blessing for me.  I work with an outstanding faculty of teachers and staff.  The children are pretty special too!  Children have a special quality in that they know how to brighten your day with a smile and a kind word.  I love my job, and everyday is an adventure.  I love working with children, and I love to see the progress they make throughout the year.  My goal is to help them feel like they can do anything when they try their very best!
